Format
Online learning through the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT) provides a flexible alternative to traditional on-campus courses as a convenient way to earn your degree whenever your career or other life commitments prevent you from taking classes on campus in a traditional setting.
Online students utilize Canvas, OSU's online learning portal to watch lectures, turn in assignments and communicate with classmates and professors.
Courses taught online are of identical quality and instruction as those taught in traditional classrooms. CEAT Online Learning and the IEM faculty are here to help you succeed!
Curriculum
The MSIEM may be earned by one of two plans:
Plan I-coursework with thesis. Minimum 30 credit hours consisting of 24 credit hours of coursework and 6 credit hours of research (IEM 5000) with a grade of "SR".
Plan II-Coursework without thesis. Minimum of 33 credit hours. May include culminating experiences e.g., independent study, internship/practicum.
All MS plans require the selection of a track. The IEM department currently supports a variety of courses in one general track and three specialty tracks:
- General Industrial Engineering (GIE)
- Engineering Management (EM)
- Operations Research (OR)
- Supply Chain & Logistics (SCL)

Students in this program will demonstrate
- The understanding of advanced concepts, methods and technologies in an IE&M thrust area.
- The understanding of IE&M beyond a specific thrust area.
- The understanding of the role of industrial engineering, management and leadership in business and society.
- The ability to identify, formulate and creatively solve unstructured problems.
- The ability to think at all six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation).
- The knowledge and skills required to apply fundamental IE concepts, methods and technologies.
- Sufficient knowledge and skills in math, basic science, and engineering science to successfully perform in their thrust area.
- The understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
- The ability to effectively communicate problem definitions, analysis, potential solutions, results and recommendations to both technical and general audiences.
- The understanding of research methodologies in terms of planning and executing a creative research program and communicating the results.
Admissions
The deadline for applying for admission to the MSIEM program is September 1st for spring admission and February 1st for fall admission.
