Why study Forensic Sciences online through OSU?

It is the mission of the School of Forensic Sciences to provide an effective learning and research environment for students and practitioners of forensic science. The vision is to facilitate education and research to develop students and practitioners as lifelong learners and innovators; collaborate with institutions and individuals engaged in the practice of forensic science to enrich the student learning experience; supply highly qualified forensic scientists to enhance the overall quality of forensic disciplines; participate in new areas of research and enhance public security; lead in the delivery of forensic science education through emerging technologies; and pursue and support cross-disciplinary collaborations that strengthen the program and enrich the graduate education process.

Format

  • 32 credit hours
  • All non-thesis pathways are fully online
  • All courses are offered online for the following tracks of emphasis: Arson, Explosives, Firearm and Tool Mark Investigations; Forensic Investigative Sciences; Forensic Psychology; Forensic Crime Analysis; and Forensic Threat Assessment and Management.
  • The Forensic Biology/DNA (DNA) and Forensic Chemistry/Toxicology (TOX) tracks can be completed fully online if students pursue a non-thesis degree option.

Curriculum

Our curriculum offers a solid background in forensic sciences and specialized topics such as blast injuries and effects, criminalistics, forensic leadership, ethics, the law and expert evidence, psychology, and organizational development. In the non-thesis pathway, students complete a capstone paper/project via enrollment in FRNS 5980 – Non-thesis Creative Component.

Admissions Requirements and Deadlines

Suggested application deadlines are July 1 for Fall admission and October 1 for Spring admission. Applicants are encouraged to submit application materials at least six weeks prior to the start of the semester.

GCRT Admission Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with a recommended grade point average of 3.0 or better. (Applicants graduating from schools outside the U.S. are required to submit transcripts that have been evaluated to U.S. standards.)
  • Resume/CV
  • Statement of Purpose to include personal career goals and how the graduate certificate will support those goals.
  • Basic computer skills, equipment, and internet access are required for participation in online courses. Participants need the capacity for independent learning, access to a computer, Internet, and e-mail, as well as proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • $50.00 application fee (domestic)
