Why study Learning, Design & Technology online through OSU?

The EdD in Learning, Design, and Technology meets the needs of students who have a strong desire to pursue theoretically-grounded doctoral level study in Learning, Design, and Technology but whose career interests lie outside the traditional role of academic researcher. This degree prepares professionals to design, enhance, and evaluate human experiences associated with teaching, learning, performance, and emerging technologies in a variety of industries and settings, including business, communication, health care, and government.

Format

This degree program is offered in a synchronous online format. Students attend class through video conferencing platforms (such as Zoom) and access materials through Canvas, OSU’s online learning platform. Class meetings generally have a start time of 4:30 pm central to accommodate fulltime work schedules.

 

Curriculum

This research degree integrates instructional design, online teaching, the effects of technology on cognition and learning, and design-based research with emerging technologies and creativity. The program requires 60 hours of online coursework:

  • Common Core: hours 9 hours
  • Research Courses: 9 hours
  • Specialization: 32 hours
  • Dissertation: 10 hours

Faculty

You will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty and companies to provide access to emerging tools and improve the design and evaluation of commercial tools, present at national conferences, develop learning applications and interventions and engage in authentic problem solving. Through your dissertation work you will address an authentic problem in your authentic context. For example, you might use principles and practices of research design to complete a program evaluation in your workplace or to complete a thorough assessment of an educational technology that you design.

 

Admissions

Applications to the program are considered on a rolling basis with semester cut-offs as follows:

  • Fall semester admission – application must be complete, including letters of recommendation, no later than July 1
  • Spring or summer semester admission – application must be complete, including letters of recommendation, no later than December 1. 

To apply to the EdD in Learning, Design and Technology program, complete the following: 

  • Graduate College application
  • Transcripts from all previously attended institutions (3.0 minimum graduate GPA required)
  • Current resume/vita
  • Statement of professional goals
  • Three letters of recommendation 
  • Scholarly or technical writing sample 
  • A master’s degree in any field
