Get on the pathway for alternative certification to teach in secondary schools

Individuals seeking alternative teaching certification through the Oklahoma State Department of Education can complete the necessary coursework to transition to permanent licensure to teach grades 6-12, while also earning a graduate certificate Oklahoma State University. Our faculty will help you develop a strong pedagogical foundation of research-based strategies to manage a classroom and teach secondary English, mathematics, social studies, science and agriculture. Students will work with the Oklahoma State Department of Education to meet alternative certification requirements.

Overview

Successful completion of this fully online certificate program requires 12 credit hours (four courses) of graduate-level coursework in curriculum studies and science and math education. Credit hours are transferable to additional graduate degree programs.

Required (nine credit hours):

  • CIED 5333: Effective Classroom Management for Secondary Schools*
  • CIED 5363: Effective Teaching Strategies for Teaching in the 6-12 Classroom*
  • CIED 5010: Practicum for Early Career Secondary Teachers

Elective (three credit hours - select one of the following):

  • CIED 5403: Teaching and Learning in the Secondary Schools: English/Language Arts Method
  • CIED 5413: Teaching and Learning in the Secondary Schools: Social Studies*
  • SMED 5153: Methods for Teaching Secondary Mathematics*
  • SMED 5143: Methods for Teaching Secondary Science*
  • AGED 5823: Advanced Methods of Teaching Agriculture

*Micro-credentials: Students can earn a micro-credential upon successfully completing these courses.

Admissions Requirements and Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants will be notified of admission status within four to six weeks of submission.

 

To apply for the program, complete the following:

  • Transcripts from all previously attended institutions (undergraduate degree from an accredited university)

  • Professional goal statement
